Fire safety in the home PRINT

Firefighters recommendations:

  • Install and maintain at least one smoke alarm in your home.
  • Prepare a home escape plan and practise it. In the event of fire, crawl low under smoke and call 000 from a neighbours house.
  • Make sure that doors and windows can be easily opened from the inside. Keep keys readily available. Click here for more on security and fire safety.
  • Keep flammable items away from heaters and screen wood fires.
  • When cooking, never leave food (especially oil and fat) unattended.
  • Do not smoke in bed.
  • Never leave burning candles unattended.
  • Purchase a fire blanket or fire extinguisher. Know how and when to use it.
  • If your clothes catch fire remember to stop, drop, cover your face and roll.
  • All household electrical appliances should be used, installed and maintained according to the manufacturers specifications.
  • Clean chimneys and flues regularly.
