Fire and Emergency Services Education and Heritage Centre PRINT

Visit the Fire & Emergency Services Education & Heritage Centre

FESA is proud to announce the opening of the Fire and Emergency Services Education and Heritage Centre, situated in the Old Central Fire Station in the Perth CBD.  The Centre was officially opened on Thursday 27 August 2009 by the Hon Rob Johnson MLA.

The Centre incorporates all hazards and emergency responses associated with FESA; an education centre for schools and community groups; and showcases the history of fire brigades in Western Australia. The building has been beautifully refurbished and exhibits have been modernised to increase the heritage interpretation of the site.  Its heritage significance is supported by a collection of vintage fire service appliances, historical archives and memorabilia, some of which will be on display.  The all-hazards gallery currently focuses on the elements of fire (bushfire and structure fire) and water (flood, tsunami, storm surge and water rescue).

School children are welcome to visit the centre.  A comprehensive curriculum-based education program is to be rolled out over the next 3 years, starting with two programs for primary school children covering the important topics of Fire Safety and People Who Can Help Us

Heritage Trail

A heritage trail throughout the building allows visitors to guide themselves through the history of the Fire Services in WA.  This beautiful old building was Western Australia’s first purpose-built fire station when it was opened in 1901.

The Old Perth Fire Station was one of the most advanced of its time, having its own blacksmith facilities and workshop where firefighters made fire fighting equipment and clothing (right down to buttons and boots).

In 1979, the Perth Brigade vacated the old Perth Fire Station and the building was reopened in 1985 as the Fire Safety Education Centre and Museum.

The building has been restored to its original form but without the stables and workshop.  It is on the State Register of Heritage Places and has been assessed by the Heritage Commission and National Trust.

Our friendly volunteer gallery guides are happy to answer questions you may have about the building and its history.
