Prepare for cyclones PRINT


THE cyclone season extends from 1 November to 30 April. When a cyclone approaches, you should listen to your radio for cyclone information. Members of the community should follow the recommended actions in the Cyclone Community Alerts to increase their safety.

BLUE ALERT - Precaution

Members of the community are advised/encouraged to take precautions:

  • Ensure your family is aware of cyclone procedures
  • Identify a safe place for your pets
  • Consider relocating people with special needs such as the elderly or infirm
  • Listen to radio, watch the television or visit the Bureau of Meteorology website for cyclone reports, forecasts and advice
  • Identify, secure or remove any loose material and rubbish around your property
  • Organise your Emergency Kit
  • Ensure your vehicle has a full tank of fuel and park in the most sheltered area available with handbrake applied and in gear or shift in ‘park’ position.

YELLOW ALERT - Action
Significant risk that destructive winds will occur in your area and you should take action:

  • Be aware of the location of your family members and pets
  • Evacuations will be recommended during Yellow Alert if you live in a low-lying coastal area and the cyclone is likely to create a storm surge
  • Securely fasten all cyclone screens into position
  • Secure boats, trailers, garden sheds, rainwater tanks and LPG bottles
  • Ensure emergency supplies are in order as identified in Blue Alert
  • Fill emergency containers with water
  • Prepare to move to the strongest part of your house or closest welfare centre

RED ALERT - Shelter
Destructive Winds are likely to occur very soon. 

  • Disconnect electrical appliances and turn off gas supply valves
  • Park vehicles in the most sheltered area available with handbrake applied and in gear or shift in ‘park’ position
  • Go immediately to the strongest part of your house and stay away from windows and doors, keeping them all closed
  • Monitor cyclone’s progress by listening to announcements on portable radio/television
  • Remain indoors until the ‘All Clear With Caution’ is announced

ALL CLEAR – WITH CAUTION

  • The wind and storm surge danger has passed, although ground hazards may still exist
    Listen to radio/television for public information announcements
  • Ensure your own safety by proceeding outside with caution and check for ground hazards such as downed power lines, fallen trees, broken water and sewage lines, loose roof sheeting and debris
  • Check to see if neighbours are all right
  • Report any injuries or dangerous situations to State Emergency Service
  • Commence clean up of immediate area
  • Avoid using the telephone, except in case of emergency
